Perche no?

Are you saving something for a better time? A shirt you bought for a special occasion? Those plates you only take out for special occasions? That bottle of champagne you’re saving up for that moment? I recently realized I even have incense that for some reason I only burn in the evenings or on weekends. Today I asked myself why and started burning it at 7:30 a.m. If there’s one thing that keeps coming up during this COVID purgatory is ‘why not’ or in Italian - perche no?

It is human to create rituals, habits, rules. It provides comfort, but what these past few months has shone a light on is that no amount of ritual can help one escape reality and it often can contribute to anxiety, making one feel stuck and frozen. The easiest way to become unstuck is to ask perche no? It’s actually one of my favorite things to do, a remnant of my time living in Florence. Start with something small!

Some examples:

  • I’ve always wanted to take a life drawing class but was too nervous to go in person. Perche no?

  • I’ve been watching a lot of British crime dramas. I wonder what it’s like to drink tea instead of coffee in the morning. Perche no?

  • I wonder what roleplaying is like? Perche no?

I encourage you to try it. I PROMISE you won’t regret it. Once you start, you usually can’t stop. It’s empowering and exciting and lets you take back control in this chaotic world.
