So you want a passion project, now what?

It’s probably very cliche but I truly believe that you don’t choose a passion project, it chooses you. I can’t believe I just wrote that, but the alternative will have you spiraling down an Instagram black hole, comparing yourself to everyone else who has found their passion and surprise surprise turned it into a lucrative business.

If you prefer not to do that, then letting your passion choose you is the way to go. I like to think life is basically a process of elimination. Did that, hated it. Tried this, kind of enjoyed it, but want a little more. Tested this, didn’t hate it. Jumped into this, loved it. How do I find a way to do more of that.

I’ve found the key to finding a passion project is to be open. You would be surprised how not open we are. While process and routine often provides comfort, like a hygge for the soul, it also can dull you into not exploring and tapping into your creativity.

Testing this out does not need to be a big thing. You don’t have to pour your savings into an enlightenment retreat (although those are nice sometimes). Or commit yourself to a six month long photography class. Serious commitments that sour are a surefire way of exhausting yourself out of a passion project.

Start small. I mean really small. Unlocking your passion is like a muscle and you’d be surprised at how small changes open up your mind. Wake up at 7 every morning? Wake up at 6 and see what you end up doing with that extra hour of solitude. Always make your coffee the same way? Switch it up or (gasp!) try tea. Once you start asking yourself ‘why not’ with the little things, you’ll get addicted to this feeling and want to try it with bigger things. You’ll be on the adventure to finding a passion project before you realize it.
